Bible — but not only the Bible.
In the twenty centuries since Jesus walked among us a whole lot of his people have gained a lot of wisdom. We want to learn from the best of them.
History — but not just history.
Toynbee once quipped that some think history is just one damned thing after another. A whole lot of people agree with that misguided view.
We are here to abolish it. Or at least we commit ourselves to never embody it.
We want to plumb the depths of history in a search for lasting wisdom.
Theology — but not any old theology.
A lot of what is written under the heading of “theology” seems to think that the Christian faith can be constructed out of our own imaginations. We listen instead to the Church — Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant.
We’ll stick with the theology that comes from personal knowledge of the living God. It tends to ring true across the ages among those who cling to Christ and worship the Triune God.
Practice — but not every practice.
There are practices in lived Christianity. They evolve over time, and sometimes you can look back from the practice of one age and say something new has entered the scene. But inventing practices is not our agenda. We’ll stick to the ones that have helped millions for centuries.
We want to look hard at practice that help Christians live into the depths of the faith.
